The university of Alicante in cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) carried out a five-day fact-finding mission from March 16 to March 20, 2015, in Jamaica in which face-to-face interviews were conducted with some major stakeholders. As a result of these interviews the report “Integrating Intellectual Property into Innovation Policy Formulation in Jamaica” has been published.
 
A primary objective of this report is to understand the current innovation system of Jamaica, and the extent to which intellectual property is or should be incorporated therein. It included a desk review to map the innovation system in Jamaica and to identify the main institutions and actors. It also offers country-specific recommendations for more effectively using the IP system to strengthen the national innovation system.
 
Some of the stakeholders interviewed were the Jamaica Intellectual Property Organization (JIPO), University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech), Bio-Tech R&D Institute, Scientific Research Council (SRC), Caribbean Maritime Institute, Bureau of Standards (BSJ), Ministry of Industry, Investment & Commerce (MIIC), Jamaica Business Development Corporation (JBDC), University of the West Indies, Mona (UWI), Northern Caribbean University (NCU) and Ministry Science Technology, Energy and Mining (MSTEM), among others.
