One of the first activities of the IPICA project was conducting a benchmarking study with the main objective of determining the knowledge base of the Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and Research Organizations (ROs) in the Caribbean Countries, in order to obtain a better understanding of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) & Knowledge Transfer (KT) regulations and policies being currently practiced.
The exercise covered sixteen Higher Education Institutions and seven Research Organizations from Barbados, Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago.
The questionnaire used in the benchmarking study was designed to collect information on five general areas related to IPR & KT policies at Caribbean HEIs and Research Organizations, namely:
1) General Information about the Institutions
2) IPR Policies and Regulations
3) Methodologies or procedures to transfer research results to the market
4) Gaps in the systems
5) Key indicators
